Losing ATM cards can be much more tricky than getting your cash stolen. Wondering what should you do next to protect your identity?
Here are the steps you need to take if you lose your card:
- Make a report
The very first thing you must do is call your bank to inform them about the loss of your card, then ask to have the said card instantly cancelled.
The operator will most likely be asking many security questions, but the entire process is to put stop your card from functioning. Even if it is not stolen or simply misplaced, this step is crucial to prevent whoever finds the card from causing mischief.

- Replace the card
After deactivating the lost card, head to the nearest bank branch and fill up the requisite forms to replace your card. A new card will be ready instantly, and you only have to reset a password at the ATM.

- Prepare emergency cash
It is always best to prepare some emergency cash while waiting for your new ATM card to be ready. Most banks now offer cardless withdrawal services from an ATM. The amount is usually capped at an amount below RM500, but the cap may vary depending on your bank.
You will also have to face a bunch of security questionnaires with the bank officer on the phone, but it will provide you with money to hold you over.
The bank will use your phone number to transfer the code you need to withdraw. However, do not use this method if you also lost all your personal belongings, including your mobile phone.
