Covid 19 Sub-Variant Omicron XBB: Khairy Urges Malaysians To Mask Up

Khairy Jamaluddin, the Minister of Health, announced that Malaysia is undergoing a small wave of Covid-19 after an increase in case numbers.

Based on the current situation, Khairy said people should keep their face masks in enclosed areas with huge crowds as the new Covid-19 wave sweeps the country.

Khairy said that the community need to be stayed on the lookout and adhere to the TRIIS method – Test, Report, Isolate, Inform and Seek if they are found to be infected.

He also added that the drug Paxlovid would be given to high-risk patients.

Between the 23rd and 29th of October, new infection cases had been increasing by 16.5% to 16,917 cases from the previous week of 14,255 cases.

The number of hospital patients also grew by 14.3% for every 100,000 people, added Khairy during a press conference in Putrajaya.

“However, we found that in terms of entry to government hospitals, the most is among those who have mild symptoms.” he said while sharing the increase in 2% use of beds in intensive care units (ICUs).

“In other words, we are being faced with a small wave,” Khairy said. He also added that he is unsure whether the wave will worsen, and it all depends on public efforts to avert the situation from worsening.

Despite that, he stressed that the Covid-19 situation still remained under control. “Bottomline, cases are rising slightly. Hospitalisations are rising slightly. Nothing to worry about, the situation is under control, but we must take precautions because we are in the transition to the endemicity phase.”

According to Khairy, the ministry believes the XBB sub-variant was the catalyst for the spike in new cases, even though it was discovered that the Omicron variant was the primary cause.

“This is what it means to live with Covid. We no longer have restrictions, we no longer have mandates, but the Health Ministry must advise and make recommendations when we find that the infection trend has started to increase,” he shared.

“Today is just a friendly reminder to Malaysians that yes, we are on an uptrend right now, let’s be careful,” said Khairy.
