Have you heard of ChatGPT? Why is this powerful software still free to use despite its efficiency? In this article, we will be covering the things you need to know about ChatGPT.

Here are the things you need to know about ChatGPT:
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI-powered natural language processing tool that enables you to have human-like conversations with a chatbot and perform various tasks, such as answering questions, composing emails, essays, and code.
It is currently available to the public free of charge as ChatGPT is in its research and feedback-collection stage. However, as of 1st February, there is also a paid subscription version of ChatGPT called ChatGPT Plus.
ChatGPT was launched on 30th November 2022, and was created by OpenAI, an AI and research company.
Why is ChatGPT a big deal?
Without a doubt, ChatGPT has garnered significant attention and praise since its launch. Elon Musk, one of the co-founders of OpenAI before leaving, remarked that ChatGPT is “scary good” and warned that we are not far from achieving dangerously strong AI.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, revealed on Twitter that ChatGPT had attracted over one million users within its first five days of launch and disclosed that the average cost of each response was only “single-digit cents.” However, Altman acknowledged that the compute costs for the platform were “eye-watering” and that it would need to be monetised eventually.
According to a report from Swiss bank UBS, ChatGPT has become the fastest-growing app of all time. Just two months after its launch in November, UBS analysis estimates that ChatGPT had already amassed 100 million active users.

How does it work?
ChatGPT is based on the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) developed by OpenAI. The specific version of GPT used by ChatGPT is fine-tuned from the GPT-3.5 series, and it is a type of generative AI model that has been trained on vast amounts of information from the internet, such as websites, books, and news articles.
To enhance its capabilities, the language model was fine-tuned using both supervised and reinforcement learning. What sets ChatGPT apart is its use of Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). According to OpenAI, it utilised RLHF to train ChatGPT, which involved human AI trainers participating in conversations in which they acted as both the user and the AI assistant.
How do people use ChatGPT?
Besides answering basic questions, ChatGPT also has a wide range of capabilities ranging from writing essays, providing detailed descriptions of art, creating AI-generated art prompts, engaging in philosophical conversations, and even coding.
This software also has the ability to assist in creating simple lists, like grocery, packing, and to-do lists, which can make daily life more efficient. The potential applications of ChatGPT are limitless, making it suitable to be used by all, regardless of age.

Is ChatGPT a good thing?
ChatGPT is an advanced chatbot that has the potential to simplify people’s lives by assisting with everyday tasks, such as writing emails or searching the internet for answers.
Even so, certain technical details must be addressed before the software can be widely used to prevent negative outcomes, such as the spread of misinformation. AI and ML models require extensive training and fine-tuning to achieve optimal performance.
Does this mean that AI is taking over the world? Not yet, but OpenAI’s Altman believes that human-style intelligence in AI is approaching quickly. In response to Musk’s warning about dangerously strong AI, Altman tweeted that he agreed in the sense that such AI could pose significant cybersecurity risks.
Furthermore, he thinks that real AGI (artificial general intelligence) may be achieved in the next decade, and society must take the associated risks seriously.
