More than 10,000 Students Skip SPM, Many Dream of Becoming an Influencer

When the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2023 results were announced a few days ago, there was an uproar on social media about the 10,160 candidates who did not attend the exam. Many social media users claim that those who do not attend are likely to want to become influencers and neglect their studies. A recurring issue every year is the failure of candidates to obtain a certificate in the SPM public examination.

Why do so many candidates fail to appear for SPM, and why do some who do appear to get an overall “G” result post it on social media?

A total of 10,160 out of 383,685 new candidates for the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) 2023 did not attend the examination.

The Director General of Education, Azman Adnan said, the issue of non-attendance needs to be addressed and investigated in order to implement effective intervention measures.

“We will investigate why these candidates did not sit for SPM 2023, moreover there is a slight decrease in the number of registered candidates compared to 2022.

“We will examine each case individually and implement interventions to deal with this issue as best as possible,” he said at the press conference announcing the analysis of the SPM 2023 results at the Ministry of Education (KPM) today.

The Influence of ‘Influencers’ Is the Cause of Over 10,000 Candidates Not Attending SPM 2023

To influencers who claim that SPM is not important, the message is one of perspective and responsibility. While it is true that not everyone is able to follow the path of learning academically, dismissing the importance of SPM altogether is an inappropriate action. SPM represents more than just a certificate it is a symbol of dedication, perseverance, and the ability to overcome challenges. Encouraging young followers to value education, including SPM, does not negate the pursuit of alternative career paths, such as influencing. Instead, it emphasises the importance of having a complete skill set and a backup plan. SPM opens doors to higher education and employment opportunities that may not be accessible otherwise. It is about empowering individuals with choices and options for their future.

Furthermore, influencers have a platform and influence over their audience. By downplaying the importance of education, they risk sending the wrong message to impressionable followers. Instead, they can use their platform to promote a balanced approach, emphasising the value of education while pursuing interests.

Through a man’s comment and an influencer through his Tiktok@weechuanchin, he thinks that school and SPM are important and will determine our future direction. As long as you can take it, go take it. You can all refer to the TikTok video above.

Is It Right To Say SPM Is Not Important?

It is unfair to say that SPM is unimportant because it plays an important role in the Malaysian education system and affects future opportunities. While not everyone follows the traditional academic path, rejecting SPM ignores its wider implications. SPM is a basic qualification that opens doors to higher education and employment, with many universities and employers requiring it. However, individual circumstances and aspirations vary. While SPM is important for some, others may succeed through a different route. Ultimately, the importance of SPM depends on personal goals, but they cannot be dismissed as unimportant.

Through the TikTok video, an influencer and a teacher known as Sir Badang sneered at a few who said SPM is not important by saying that SPM is not important if a person has a big name and also advantages in terms of skills and sports.

Become a Highly Educated Influencer

Influencers have the opportunity to inspire their audience to prioritise personal growth and development, of which education is an important component. Encouraging followers to take education seriously can lead to better opportunities and a more fulfilling future, regardless of the career path they choose.

Even if ada influencers gagal spm tapi berjaya, berapa percent je tu?? Mostly ada privilege (beauty, rich, cable) Kalau you orang biasa, b40 ke m40 ke you still kena berusaha keras kalau nak at least hidup selesa dari segi kewangan bila dah adults. Sampai bila nak duduk bawah ketiak parents? One day theyre going to be sick, old and by that time its your turn to take care of them. Benda ni berkait2 tau so memang kena start from school. Pentingkan SPM #tedtalk #spm2023 #form5 #fyp #foryou #trend #randomtalk #grwm

@miyabell mentioned that even being a social media influencer is not wrong, but knowledge is important to share with the public. You can all refer to the comments given by the influencer in the video above.

Nowadays SPM is very necessary

Most job opportunities also require SPM results, whether you are looking for a part-time job or planning to continue your studies. He also shared his experience attending a job interview at a company. In a tweet by @miyabell through her TikTok account, she said, “You need to have SPM if you want to work part-time, even if you want to apply for a degree, you need to have SPM. Everything has to include SPM. The interviewer looked at the SPM. He said, through SPM results.. he can know how that person thinks”.

Here are comments from netizens showing their worries, and some also showing evidence that education is important in life.

For students who have failed SPM but still aspire to further their studies or develop skills, there are several constructive paths they can consider:

1. Explore Vocational or Skill-Based Programs
Encourage students to explore vocational or skill-based programs offered by institutions such as vocational colleges, technical institutes, or skill training centres. These programs provide hands-on training in a variety of fields, including automotive, hospitality, information technology and more.

2. Retake the SPM Exam:
Students who wish to improve their SPM results can choose to retake the exam. They can use the extra time to review and strengthen their understanding of the subject they are dealing with, get guidance from teachers or tutors, and practice past exam papers to improve their performance.

By exploring these options and taking proactive steps, students who have faced challenges with SPM can continue their educational journey and work towards achieving their career aspirations.
