Everyone needs to at least have one cutting board in the kitchen to chop their vegetables, fruits, etc. The board can be made out of different materials and colors for those who want to organize their cutting boards for different purposes like cutting meat and vegetables so they don’t cross-contaminate.
If you’re not familiar with the types of cutting boards, let’s look at it together!
1. Wooden Cutting Board

Wooden cutting boards are commonly used in many households so it is very easy for you to find and purchase one. There are multiple types of wooden cutting boards as well (depending on your preference) but the softer wood materials are better for your knives. They are not dishwasher-safe but if you know how to take good care of them, they will last for years.

2. Bamboo Cutting Board

Bamboo has a similar hardness to a strong softwood material but if you’re not careful enough then it can dull the knives you use. Any cuts that you have made onto the board can make your cutting experience be not as smooth but at least this board would absorb less liquid compared to a wooden type so you don’t have to worry about it being less sanitary.
Material: Bamboo
Size available: 28x18cm, 38x27cm, 40x29cm
Price: RM 21.50
*Prices may vary at the time of purchase
3. Marble Cutting Board

Marble has a gorgeous design on its body but you definitely need to anticipate more cuts onto it after chopping a few times and it dulls your knife after a while. Some people who want to preserve its beauty would use it as either a display, a platter to serve food, or a trivet. If you’re not always using it for chopping then it might last longer as well.

4. Plastic Cutting Board

This cutting board is easy to be found and purchased on online shopping platforms and department stores which makes things convenient for most people. Besides that, it also comes in multiple designs and colors that make it look more attractive. However, your knives can easily scratch it and bacterias can hide in those crevices so you have to be very thorough with the cleaning process.
Material: Plastic
Size available: 20x15cm, 24x25cm, 31x20cm, 35x25cm, 37x24cm
Price: RM15.90

5. Silicone Cutting Board

A good point about a silicone cutting board is that it is flexible enough that you can bend it and dump any excess food waste without scraping the board. In another perspective, you can also say it feels like a cutting mat due to its flexibility. Thanks to its material as well, it’s usually non-slip so you get a stable grip on it during chopping and it protects the edge of your knife.
Material: Silicone
Size available: 30x20cm, 30x23cm, 38x24cm
Price: RM 56.80
*Prices may vary at the time of purchase
6. Glass Cutting Board

Glass materials have a smooth surface so it’s easy to wipe them and with a good brand, they can even be resistant to heat. A note to remember is that unfortunately this type can also quickly dull your knives and some that have a textured surface can even hide germs after cutting things. You have to clean it properly all the time.
Material: Tempered Glass
Size available: 30x 20cm, 35x25cm, 40x30cm
Price: RM 51.40

7. Stainless Steel Cutting Board

As a cutting board, it is easy to clean due to its smooth surface and can handle high temperatures but it does invite a lot of scratches after a long time. Additionally, it does not do well for your knife so you have to sharpen your knife regularly after using this board.

8. Granite Cutting Board

These boards are really pretty to look at but they can dull your knives after several uses. It’s also quite expensive to get one but they are good for rolling out dough, and you can place it on the table to use as a trivet so it can protect your table from any heat damage.

Size available: 30x20cm
Price: RM 93.00

9. Serving Cutting Board

This one is more to the design and purpose rather than the material itself because it is meant to look nice as a serving tray when you have guests over. It is still a cutting board but more towards cutting fruits, cheese or bread so you can leave it on top of it and serve it right away. You can always check the material’s durability if you’re planning to use it a lot.
Material: Wood
Size available: 18x10cm, 26x16cm, 33x20cm, 42x24cm

10. Carving Cutting Board

This is another type that also focuses on the design and purpose because this one has a juice trough to catch the juice from any cut food like when you’re cutting meat and the excess juice will fall to the side. It helps prevent any liquid mess that you have to clean up afterward. It usually comes in a wood material because it’s easy to carve into and make it with a similar design.
Material: Wood
Size available: 16x12cm, 28x18cm, 33x23cm, 38x27cm, 40x29cm
Price: RM 30.00

How to care for and maintain your cutting board:
- Rinse it with water when using it for the first time.
- Don’t soak the board for too long.
- After use and washing, you need to wipe the board dry and leave it to air-dry by its side.
- You need to oil wooden type cutting boards after using them in order to make them last longer.
Cutting boards have a different thickness which gives them sufficient weight so it does not move around too much when you are cutting things, but it should not be too heavy for you to carry around the kitchen. It’s also great to have one with a handle so you can hold onto it.
Another thing to consider is whether you can handle using the choice of material because while some may look nicer to serve things on it, it may have cons that outweigh it. It depends on what you want to prioritize having in your cutting boards.
