Perak to Enforce RM3 Stay Fee Starting 2025

The Perak State Government announced that starting January 1, 2025, visitors staying in Perak will be subject to a local service charge (CPT). Housing and Local Government Exco, Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, mentioned that similar charges are already in place in several other states under different names and interpretations.

She stated that the charge will apply universally to all accommodation providers, including hotels, homestays, and short-term rentals like Airbnb. This ensures a fair and equal distribution of the fee across the various segments of the sector.

Sandrea also stated, “The primary goal of this enactment is to regulate all accommodation services and establish uniform regulations across the various sector segments.” According to her, the fee was introduced under Hotel Enactment 2023, approved by the Perak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) last year.

The effective date of the implementation of this payment has been postponed to January 1, 2025, to appreciate the arrival of visitors who enliven the Year of Visiting Perak 2024 until the end of this year,” she told reporters during a press conference at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building here on Thursday.

Regarding this, Sandrea also urged all operators of hotels, guesthouses, rest houses, camping sites, chalets, houseboats, country stays, and other lodging places to charge visitors for obtaining the necessary license from the local authority (PBT). The government has agreed to provide a one-year grace period until June 30, 2025, to ensure ample time for engagement and educational sessions with the affected parties.

Although the license’s enforcement is suspended, the provisions of the law contained in the enactment must still be complied with. She also clarified that the license fee rate charged according to the specified category does not burden the entrepreneur.
