Michelle Yeoh is The First Malaysian and Asian Woman to Win the Oscars for Best Actress

Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh once again created history by becoming the first-ever Malaysian to win an Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards yesterday (13 March).

She has also crowned the victory as the first Asian woman to bring home the Best Actress award at the Oscars.

Yeoh also won the Actress in a Leading Role for the well-loved movie, “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, at Hollywood’s most popular award ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The other nominees for the same category were Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Cate Blanchett (Tár), Ana de Armas (Blonde) and Viola Davis (The Woman King).

Yeoh’s family and friends gathered at Dadi Cinema in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur for a live viewing of the Oscars and erupted in loud cheers right after she was announced the winner.

Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis, who starred alongside Yeoh, took home awards for Actor in a Supporting Role and Actress in a Supporting Role, respectively.

Yeoh has had a successful awards season, with numerous wins at prestigious award ceremonies.

At the recent Golden Globes Awards, she won the Best Performance award by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. The Ipoh-born also became the first Asian actress to ever win the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role award for the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2023.
